Home Addition Project - Northbrook, Illinois
Project Description: The customers came to me with a problem. The husband and wife had 2 boys, 2 dogs and a new daughter on the way while living in an 1,100 square foot ranch in Northbrook. Space was a major issue, yet it was very important to provide a home addition that wasn't noticeable and avoided excessive tax increases. The old house had no insulation in the exterior walls, metal cabinets in the kitchen, leaking windows and a cramped outdated design. We had the perfect solution.
The Solution:
Scholl Construction gutted the entire home down to the studs and removed the roof. We then added a second story, added on a larger garage, finished the basement and removed and rebuilt a room off the rear of the home. We rebuilt the entire house from the ground up while staying within the perameters for a remodel permit to avoid excessive tax increases. We worked closely with an architect to maintain the look and feel of the neighborhood while maximizing the space needed for their growing family. We avoided the big brick box look common to Northshore teardown neighborhoods. Many neighbors have positively commented on the design; it looks like the home was originally built this way in the 40's. We firmly believe a good remodeling job or addition should not be noticeable.
We ran into one challenge during construction: the foundation on the rear of the home from a previous edition wasn't strong enough to support a second story. We removed the old edition, repoured a new foundation and rebuilt the room in 2 weeks in order to keep the remodeling project on schedule. This process took 7 months from start to finish. Everything was redone. Plumbing, heating, electric, roof, framing, flooring, cabinets, windows, masonry, insulation, water service, driveway etc..
